Response of the South Indian runoff-harvesting civilization to northeast monsoon rainfall variability during the last 2000 years: instrumental records and indirect evidence

چکیده
Compared with the southwest monsoon, the mechanisms and history of northeast monsoon (NEM) variability over South Asia are poorly known. The NEM nevertheless contributes /50% of rainfall to semi-arid southeast India, and has underpinned the success, over the last 2000 years, of a widespread indigenous water resource management system based on rainwater harvesting and storage in man-made lakes. Based on a power spectrum analysis of 60to 100-yr instrumental rainfall records, we show that NEM rainfall is both chaotic in the high-frequency time domain and spatially unpredictable, but that the sustainability of the agricultural water-harvesting infrastructure is tied to excess rain from NEM cyclones. Cyclonic activity has declined sharply since 1977. Based on twentieth-century analogues, we propose a qualitative model in which storminess decreases when NEM wind intensities increase and Eurasian winter temperatures are anomalously low. Extrapolating to the Holocene time frame, model expectations for the palaeorainfall record correlate with the independently established chronologies of Indian runoff-irrigation development and the ‘Mediaeval Warm Period’ ‘Little Ice Age’ oscillations, and further suggest that NEM and SWM rainfall anomalies have covaried with the same sign from seasonal to millennial timescales. The fortunes of the reservoir system are therefore tangibly climate-driven.

The Indian monsoon variability and civilization changes in the Indian subcontinent
The vast Indo-Gangetic Plain in South Asia has been home to some of the world's oldest civilizations, whose fortunes ebbed and flowed with time-plausibly driven in part by shifts in the spatiotemporal patterns of the Indian summer monsoon rainfall. We use speleothem oxygen isotope records from North India to reconstruct the monsoon's variability on socially relevant time scales, allowing us to ...

1-Introduction Climate change refers to any significant change in the existing mean climatic conditions within a certain time period (Jana and Majumder, 2010; Giorgi, 2006). Earth's climate change through history has happened (Nakicenovic et al., 2000; Bytnerowicz et al., 2007). 2-Materials and methods In this study, daily precipitation and daily maximum (Tmax) and daily minimum (Tmin) tempera...
متن کاملA 780-year annually resolved record of Indian Ocean monsoon precipitation from a speleothem from south Oman
[1] Meteorological records of monsoon rainfall in the Indian Ocean are generally less than 100 years long. The relative brevity of these records makes it difficult to investigate monsoon variation on decadal and centennial timescales, to determine what factors influence the intensity of rainfall on these timescales, or to place possible changes in the twentieth century into a broader historical...
متن کاملSummer precipitation determinant factors of Iran's South-East
Indian Ocean is known as a source of moisture for southeast of Iran due to summer precipitation. In this study, in order to investigate the role of SST of Indian Ocean, and the convergence and divergence fields in the precipitation of southeast of Iran, precipitation data of five synoptic stations were used during 2000-2010, including Iranshahr, Khash, ChahBahar, Zabul, and Saravan. To investig...
متن کاملLate Glacial to Holocene Indian Summer Monsoon Variability Based upon Sediment Records Taken from the Bay of Bengal
Paleoclimatic records from the Bay of Bengal are rare. We reconstruct the sea-surface temperature (SST) and salinity from paired δ18O and Mg/Ca measurements in planktonic foraminifera Globigerinoides ruber from the western Bay of Bengal core VM29-19. Our data suggest that SST and seawater δ18O (δOsw) were ~3°C colder and ~0.6‰ depleted, respectively, during the Last Glacial Maximum (LGM) compar...
